What is an HD Photo / JPEG XR file?
HD Photo is Microsoft's image format introduced with Windows Vista, later standardized as JPEG XR (.jxr). It offers better compression than JPEG and supports HDR and lossless modes. Files may carry the .jxr, .wdp, or .hdp extension. It never gained browser support, so these files need conversion to be viewed.
Why won't .jxr files open in my browser or photo viewer?
No major web browser supports JPEG XR natively, and most photo viewers outside Windows dropped support years ago. Converting to JPG makes the image universally viewable on any device, browser, or platform.
Does this work with OBS HDR screenshots?
Yes. OBS Studio's HDR screenshot feature saves .jxr files that most tools can't open. This converter decodes them in your browser and outputs a standard JPG you can share anywhere.
Is there quality loss when converting HD Photo to JPG?
JPG re-encoding is lossy, so a small amount of quality loss is possible. Using 90% quality minimizes it. Note that JPG does not store HDR data — the output is standard dynamic range, which is what most viewing contexts expect.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The JPEG XR decoder runs as WebAssembly directly in your browser. Your images are processed on your device and never leave it — the page can even work offline once loaded.

About HD Photo / JPEG XR Conversion

HD Photo (JPEG XR) was Microsoft's attempt to succeed JPEG — better compression, HDR support, and lossless mode. Despite shipping in Windows and being standardized as ISO/IEC 29199-2, it never reached the web: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all lack native .jxr support. That leaves anyone with Windows-generated .jxr/.wdp/.hdp files — including the growing number of OBS HDR screenshot users — with files nothing can open. This converter decodes JPEG XR locally via a WebAssembly build of the reference jxrlib and re-encodes to universally supported JPG.

Expert Tips

  • Keep quality at 90% for screenshots — text stays crisp while file size stays reasonable
  • If an OBS .jxr looks washed out after conversion, your display is SDR; the JPG conversion maps HDR values to standard range
  • Convert in batches of 10 to keep browser memory usage low when processing screenshot folders
  • The .wdp and .hdp extensions are older names for the same format — all three decode identically
  • JPG discards transparency. If your HD Photo has an alpha channel, expect a white background in the output
