What is the formula between mmol/L and mg/dL for cholesterol?
For Total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL: mg/dL = mmol/L × 38.67, and mmol/L = mg/dL ÷ 38.67. The factor comes from the molar mass of cholesterol (386.65 g/mol).
Why do triglycerides use a different factor?
Triglycerides have a different molar mass (about 885.7 g/mol when reported as triolein), so mg/dL = mmol/L × 88.57. Using 38.67 for triglycerides is a common and serious mistake.
