Thousands & Decimal Separators by Country

The same number is written with completely different separators around the world. This reference shows the dominant convention for major languages and regions — exactly the formats the tool above produces.

Conventions shown are the dominant business/everyday usage. Official standards can differ — e.g. ISO 31-0 and the Spanish RAE recommend a thin space as the thousands separator.

How to Convert Between US, EU and Indian Formats

US → European

Remove the commas, swap the decimal dot for a comma, then regroup thousands with dots (French/Russian style uses spaces): 1,234,567.89 → 1234567.89 → 1.234.567,89.

European → US

Strip every dot or space, then turn the decimal comma into a dot: 1.234.567,89 → 1234567.89 → 1,234,567.89. Never swap the two symbols in place — regroup from the plain number.

Any → Indian (lakh/crore)

Normalize to plain digits, group the last three, then pairs going left: 1234567.89 → 12,34,567.89. In words: 1 lakh = 100,000 and 1 crore = 10,000,000.

Golden rule: always normalize to plain digits first, then apply the target convention. Swapping separators in place is risky — 1.234 read as "one point two three four" instead of "1234" is a 1000× error.

Hvordan fungerer automatisk gjenkjenning?
Automatisk gjenkjenning analyserer inndatatallet ditt for å bestemme formatet.
How do I express a number in lakhs and crores?
Select the "Business & Financial" category and check the Indian Lakh and Indian Crore cards. 1 lakh equals 100,000 and 1 crore equals 10,000,000, so 12,34,567.89 shows as "12.35 lakh" and 1,23,45,678 as "1.23 crore" — the units used in Indian news, budgets, and property prices.
Which countries use a comma as the decimal separator?
Most of continental Europe and Latin America: German, French, Spanish (Spain), Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Dutch, and Indonesian all write decimals with a comma (1,5 means one and a half). English-speaking countries, China, Japan, Korea, and Mexico use a dot. When reading a foreign invoice or report, always confirm which convention applies before copying a number.
How do I convert a European number to the US format?
Strip the thousands separators first (dots in German/Spanish/Italian, spaces in French/Russian), then replace the decimal comma with a dot: 1.234.567,89 → 1234567.89 → 1,234,567.89. This formatter does it automatically — paste the number, pick the source format, and copy the US card. UK and US formats are identical, so no extra step is needed for UK numbers.
What is the Arabic decimal separator?
Arabic has its own separators: U+066B (٫, Arabic decimal separator) and U+066C (٬, Arabic thousands separator), normally used with Arabic-Indic digits, e.g. ١٬٢٣٤٬٥٦٧٫٨٩. In practice, many Arabic financial documents use Western digits with a dot and comma instead. When in doubt, normalize the number to plain digits before reformatting.
